What to Do When a Pipe Bursts in your Home

A burst pipe is one of those household emergencies that goes from ‘small problem’ to ‘major problem’ in minutes. Water can quickly soak into walls, flooring, cabinets and electrical systems if it isn’t stopped fast.

The good news? Knowing what to do in the first few minutes can significantly reduce damage and repair costs.

If a pipe bursts in your Gold Coast home, here are five steps you should take immediately.

  1. Turn off Your Main Water Supply

The first and most important step is to shut off your main water valve.

This stops water from continuing to flow through the burst pipe and flooding your home. In most Gold Coast properties, the main shut off valve is located:

  • Near the water meter at the front of property
  • Along the side of the house
  • Occasionally under a sink in the kitchen, garage or laundry

Turn the valve clockwise until it stops. If you’re unsure where the shut off valve is, it’s worth locating it now – before an emergency happens.

  1. Turn off Electricity If Water Is Near Power

If the burst pipe is near electrical outlets, appliances, or your switchboard, switch off the electricity at the main board if it feels safe to do so.

Water and electricity together can create a serious safety risk.

If you’re unsure, it’s best to stay clear of the area and call a professional plumber immediately.

  1. Drain the Remaining Water From the Pipes

Once the main water supply is turned off, open your taps around the house.

This helps:

  • Release pressure in the plumbing system
  • Drain remaining water from pipes
  • Reduce further leaking

Start with cold taps then flush toilets once to help empty the system.

  1. Limit Water Damage While You Wait for a Plumber

Even after the water supply is off, there may still be water leaking from the damaged pipe. Try to contain the damage where possible:

  • Place buckets or containers under leaks
  • Use towels to soak up any water
  • Move furniture and valuables away from the area
  • Turn on fans or ventilation to help dry surfaces

The faster you remove standing water, the less change there is of long term damage or mould.

  1. Call an Emergency Plumber on the Gold Coast

Burst pipes almost always require a professional repair.

A licenced plumber can:

  • Locate the exact burst pipe
  • Repair or replace the damaged section
  • Check for hidden water damage
  • Test the system before turning water back on

Trying to patch a burst pipe yourself can often make the problem worse or cause further leaks later.

What causes Pipes to Burst?

Burst pipes can happen for several reasons:

  • Ageing or corroded pipes
  • High water pressure
  • Ground movement
  • Tree roots intrusion
  • Poor installation or old/loose fittings
